Why I’m Running for Democratic Central Committee - District 46

Republican policies are bad for Baltimore and they’re bad for democracy. ICE agents are disappearing our neighbors, Trump court appointees are gutting voting rights across the country and we’re engaging in illegal wars and acts of aggression around the world. Critical institutions from the FDA to the Department of Education are being gutted and turned upside-down.

What does this have to do with the Baltimore City Central Committee?
Across the country a thousand small battles are being fought every day to resist growing authoritarianism. Battles often fought at the state and local level. In the current redistricting fight in Annapolis Larry Hogan cast a long shadow in the form of judicial appointments that weighed into our Senate President’s decision to not bring redistricting to a vote. The lasting deleterious effects of the previous decade’s elections. A 2016 Maryland gubernatorial race could mean further erosion of civil rights on the federal level in 2027.

A strong opposition party is essential to combating fascism, a strong party is built from the ground up. I am running to build that opposition party. It may be a small role but progress requires many hands.

I am running to grow a party that uplifts working class people of all backgrounds and protects the rights of marginalized folks. I am eager to learn from others working in this space and believe that I have some valuable experience and perspectives to contribute.

The Democratic Central Committee is not a policy making body. It is a core of elected volunteers that help turn out the vote, supports and recruits candidates and fundraises. Like the other candidates for this role, I have volunteered and worked on local political campaigns. I’ve knocked doors, phone banked and organized volunteers.

What do I bring to the table?
Vision, Grit and Creativity

Back in 2013 I was living up in Oliver, around Preston and Central, and I was working at a restaurant called Shuckers down in Fells. I didn’t have a car at the time so I’d often walk home. Some evenings I’d walk home through Old Town Mall. I’ve always thought, despite its dilapidated state, that it was a really beautiful street. A friend and I had been discussing opening a haunted attraction for a few years and one night as I walked past the old Kaufman’s department store I had a vision…

Today we bring thousands of people to Old Town Mall every October, raising the profile of this historic neighborhood. We create jobs for a diverse mix of local artists, students and folks who just love to get spooky. It’s a project that is still growing every year.

I want to bring what I’ve learned in this and other projects, the resources at my disposal and my passion to the central committee. I can put on an event, I can get the word out and I can manage a team. I know what hard works looks like and I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty.

How can I help?

What is the Democratic Central Committee?

The Democratic Central Committee are the grass roots of the Democratic Party. Committee members are elected at the local level and serve both their local and the state wide committee. The committee manages the affairs of the party, works to register and turn out voters, fundraise and staff events. The committee is responsible for recommending appointments to the governor and filling office vacancies.
